Phonics - Phonics - focus on the ‘oo/o-e’ sounds. Please load up phonic play.

Go onto resources and phase 5. Scroll down to alternative spellings ‘oo’ and work through the 3 activities in there. Any phonic games on phase 5 are great for the children as they will have learnt the sounds and applying these to spelling and reading is very important. Please try to read the 3 sentences under 5C week 14 ‘oo’ sounds set for the Wednesday and Friday, it consolidates the different sounds in words. This is further down on the phase 5 resource page.

Play any phonic games they would like on phonic play or Discovery Education on a daily basis will reinforce what has been taught during phonic lessons.

 

Maths 1- This week we would like the children to consolidate their multiplication and division work by answering fluency questions. There are a variety of questions, please choose the ones that are appropriate for your child (they will be uploaded onto Facebook as maths 1 fluency). However, if you feel your child needs to continue halving, doubling, sharing into equal groups or using arrays, please continue with this.

Maths 2- Continue to consolidate their knowledge by answering reasoning and problem solving questions. Year 1 pupils are expected to be able to answer these questions once gaining the prior knowledge. The same as above, please select the questions which you feel your child can access, as some are of a higher level than others (they will be uploaded onto Facebook as maths 2 reasoning and problem solving). And again, please continue to practise the prior knowledge as stated in lesson 1 if your child needs to. 

It is extremely important that the children have grasped doubling, halving, sharing and arrays before answering these questions.

Maths 3- For lesson 3, we would like the children to go onto Numbots to consolidate their addition and subtraction and Times Table Rockstars (TTR) to build upon their multiplication and division. Please do let me know if their child is finding TTR easy or too hard as I am able to add and take away times tables, however I will not be adding them all. 

Please note, on TTR I cannot set it to just multiplication or division!

 

English 1- Using the idea of magic beans.  Ask the children what 3 things they would like to find in the giants castle.  Write these in sentences using a capital letter and full stop.

Can you say why you would like to find that object? Can you use an adjective to describe the noun you find? 

Challenge- Tell an adult what verbs you have used.

 

 

English 2- We would like to introduce verbs to the children. Can they make a list of all the verbs(doing words) they can think of. Think of all the things that we can do! 

There are videos on YouTube to show children verbs, if you would like to watch them Periwinkle and Action Verbs give a good set of examples. 

Please play Simon says so the children understand it is the action of doing that is the verb not the activity.  E.g. Simon says sleep in a bed. Sleep is the verb, not in a bed. Simon says play football. Play is the verb not football.

Challenge - make a poster of all the different verbs you can think of. 

 

English 3- Spelling- Please continue to help your child to spell the words on the common exception sheet.  They don’t need to write them, they can call them out to you. 

There are games on phonic play to support this, if you prefer to play games.  If they are confident with the spelling, say a sentence to you using them.  Try stamping the words out around the room. Try singing the letters or whispering them. Play hangman. Cut up lots of individual letters and ask them to select the letters to make words you call out. Just a few examples here.

If your child is able to spell all of the words revisit the phonic sheet we sent home in the spelling book with all the sounds on it. Please check they can read and spell using all the different ways of spelling the sounds.  Only do 5 a week as they are a lot on there.

 

 

Science- What is the difference between an evergreen and a deciduous tree?

Look at trees on a walk and decide if they are deciduous or evergreen trees.

Main differences are 

Leaves change colour on deciduous trees. Oak trees give acorns, cherry trees have blossom and give cherries.

Evergreen stay green all the time. E.g. conifer and fir trees

Most deciduous trees have wide broad leaves, evergreen leaves are much smaller and are spiky.

 

RE- We would like the children to talk about looking after the natural world and how to keep it looking nice.

Discuss how humans do not always look after the natural world, litter, graffiti, plastic in the sea, dog mess, picking flowers, touching bird nests, building new towns etc.

When outside look at litter and how it could harm wildlife. What should we do with litter?

Discuss graffiti. Do they like it? Is it right to paint on buildings? 

Talk about sensible dog owners and what they should do.

Why should we not touch bird nests?

Why should we not pick flowers? Talk of the fine for picking bluebells. 

Challenge - discuss the plastic litter in the sea and what we should do with it.

Can they make a poster to show how to keep our world safe and pleasant for all to live in?

 

Topic- Watch a weather forecast on the Television and discuss the weather symbols used.

Using their map from last week and weather symbols discussed a few weeks back ask the children to write a weather forecast.

Please choose either challenge 1, 2 or 3 for your child.

Challenge 1 - write a weather forecast for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland stating the weather for the day.  E.g In Scotland it will be sunny.

Challenge 2 - write a weather forecast for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland saying the weather and clothes you need to wear. E.g. in Scotland it will be hot and sunny so wear shorts and T-shirt and use sun cream.

Challenge 3 - write a weather forecast for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland saying the weather and clothes you need to wear and an activity you could do. E.g. in Scotland it will we hot and sunny so wear shorts and a T-shirt and use sun cream.  Enjoy the paddling pool.

You can really extend this by asking the children to be a weather forecaster and make a video of them reading their ideas and pointing to a location on their map.
