After Christmas, PE will change from a Monday morning to a Thursday morning so please come in on that day in your PE kit. This will be my Planning time our of class and will be covered by Mr Radley and Miss Keogh who will be coming back from maternity leave. From the second week after Christmas, the children will be grouped into two Maths groups. Please be aware that these groups are changeable and may not be the same as when they were in year 4. On the 4th January, children will be set Home Learning tasks on Teams. These are not optional and children should be accessing the Home Learning for that day in this way.
May I take this opportunity to thank you for your kind presents and cards. It has been a different type of term to normal but all of your children have been amazing and have approached school with a fantastic attitude.
I wish you all a very happy Christmas an a safe New Year.
Our new topic will be Rivers and Water. Please see the overview in the files section for an idea of what we will be covering this term.
Our Big Read is Floodland by Marcus Sedgewick.
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY HOMEWORK: over the Christmas break, I would like you to do some homework for our new topic: Rivers and Water. I have posted the homework sheet into the class materials on Teams for you to use to help you. Just like when you did your Victorian homework, please try your very best and think about presentation. Try not to make it too big as I would like to display the work you produce. You have until the 5th of January, so plenty of time! Have fun!
FRIDAY CROSS COUNTRY EVENT: This Friday all of the juniors are taking part in a cross country event at school. You will need to come in wearing your PE kit but bring a change of shoes in a carrier bag as it will be muddy on the field. There will be two races, one for the boys and one for the girls. All children will receive a certificate from the William De Ferrers Sports Partnership.
This year for Christmas each class will be learning a song to be recorded for a school DVD. This will then be available for parents to buy as we would normally do this time of year. Each class will be filmed separately at a safe distance by the external company who films our Christmas production. With this in mind, please can you double check if you have given permission for your child to appear in the DVD. This would have been on the back of the data collection sheet given out last half term. If you have not given permission then your child will not be allowed to appear in the DVD.
I hope the the first week back has been a success. It is a very strange thing for the children to understand when the rest of the country is on lockdown and we are still coming to school however, they have come back this week happy and ready to learn. I am always checking in on the children's well being and making sure that they feel safe. Please encourage your children to talk to myself or Mrs Neeve if at any time they are feeling anxious or worried and we will do our best to alleviate their concerns.
This half term we are continuing to learn about Space in Science and The Victorians in History. We will soon begin a DT unit on bridges and will be attempting to make prototypes out of whatever we can find! In maths, we are focusing on addition and subtraction as well as multiples, factors and primes. Towards the end of this term we will be learning more about fractions and decimals. We will be looking at biographical writing in English.
Please keep up the reading at home. Reading a range of texts is key to children accessing new language and writing structures. Audio books are also an excellent resource, especially at bed time!
MyMaths and First News iHub will continue to be set weekly and we will be phasing in other homework tasks on Teams. Please familiarise yourself with this platform if you have not done so. Using this on a laptop or computer is the most effective way as some documents will require word. I cannot accept paper copies of homework as a protective measure.
Thank you for your support.
Children will have brought home a letter detailing their Teams Login and Password. We went through this in class and the children changed their generic password to a personal one. There were some passwords which did not work (I'm working on the reasons for this!) so these children have been given another password! As you can imagine, this is causing many unforeseen problems and we are trying to learn alongside the children! Please don't worry, we will phase in the use of this platform when we are all comfortable with how it works.
As of next Monday (12th October), children will be set weekly homework. They will have brought home their reminder logins for MyMaths, TT Rockstars and First News IHub which they were given today. This will continue until we switch over to using Microsoft Teams for Homework and Home Learning. The children will be taught how to access their new Learning Platform in school and hopefully will be able to teach you how to use it! This will be a gradual process so please don't panic!
PE kit: please ensure that your son or daughter arrives in the correct kit every Monday. This includes: School logo PE T shirt and blue shorts if the weather is warm or School PE logo T-Shirt and a dark plain tracksuit or plain black leggings if the weather is cold. Children are wearing clothing with lots of logos and labels which is not part of our uniform policy.
Friday 25th September is non-uniform day in support of Macmillan cancer support. We would normally have a coffee morning but with current guidelines we are unable to do this so we have decided to collect a donation and ask the children to wear something green. The donation buckets will be on the gates as the children come into school. Thank you for your support.
***SQUARE NUMBER CHALLENGE!***
I have challenged the children to learn their square numbers up to and including 12x12. They will be asked these next Wednesday (23rd) in a random order! It is really helpful for children to know these as it helps with multiplication recall as well as having a good understanding of what makes a number 'square.'
I've attached pages to help in the links section.
In the folder marked 'Class Information', you will find our Meet the Teacher letter which we would normally hand out at the beginning of the year. Hopefully you will have all the information you need on there however should you wish to contact me you can email email@example.com. Please make sure you write in the subject box, who the email is for as both year 5 teachers will have access to this account.
I hope you and your children are settling back into school and I look forward to meeting you all at some point!
