Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a wonderful break from school. The children have come back to school eager to learn and have settled well.
We have an opportunity for parents and carers to come into class and look at your child's learning journeys on the 24th January at 9.00am and 2.30pm. It is a fantastic chance for the children to show you all the wonderful work they have done so far, so please check your calendars!
So far this term in Phonics we have been recapping the sounds we learnt last term (there are a lot!) and have started to learn some new digraphs too (a digraph is two letters that together make one sound). We are now concentrating on the digraphs ch sh th ng
This term we are really beginning to extend the children's phonic skills not only in their reading but also in their writing so that they can write simple sentences independently. The children are working extremely hard, and any support you can give your child at home to continue this would be fantastic.
We read and change reading books twice a week in school, please could you try to read each books twice at home or until your child is fluent with the book and remember to write a comment in the record books each time. Parental support does make a huge difference to a child's development, so all work at home in reading, writing and maths is helping your child's progress in school.
Our topic this term is the story 'we're going on a bear hunt'. The children are very familiar with this story and are enjoying the work. We will be adapting the story to write our own version called 'we're going on a polar bear hunt' which also links with our other topic looking at winter and colder regions of the world.
Maths this term is taking a slightly more formal approach as we begin to look at formal addition and learning our number bonds. We start by working with numbers to 5, then 10 and then extend to numbers to 20. We are also learning to add two single digit numbers together (4+5=9).
We are continuing to work practically in maths this term by looking at size and learning to measure length.
Friday afternoons we are continuing with outside PE, and as it is cold please can you ensure your child has a dark coloured tracksuit in school to keep them warmer. However, due to the cold we have currently suspended our environmental activities sessions, which will continue later in the year when the weather is warmer.
Below are some of the fun activities we have been enjoying in school.
If you have any queries or questions please remember to see Mrs Adams before or after school, thank you for your continued support.
